A semi-final appearance seemed a long way off after being paired with reigning league champions Taunton's (Southampton) in the first round. Alton showed immense character to come out with a 2-1 win, and they did the same again last week.
Having been beaten 8-2 by Havant just a few weeks ago, Alton knew they must improve all aspects of their game. Coach Kester Buckland had impressed upon them what was needed and the response was superb, with Alton matching their opponents in every challenge.
Havant played the better football in the first half and 'keeper Steve Smith frequently came to Alton's rescue. With Matt Burchell marshalling their defence, Alton grew in self-belief and so it was a blow when Havant took the lead.
Alton got the perfect start to the second half, equalising within five minutes as Russell Ward pounced on a defensive error to claim his seventh goal of the season. With Dave Munt and Kit Williams becoming a growing influence, Alton began to pass the ball confidently and their task was helped when Havant were reduced to 10 men after 70 minutes.
Extra time seemed inevitable, but then Alton won a corner in the 88th minute. Neal Powell sent in an excellent cross and 'Woody' Cardona scored with a diving header.
It didn't quite turn out to be a 'last-minute winner' though, as the referee added seven minutes of injury time, all of which was played in Alton's half. Alton rode their luck as Havant missed several half-chances, to claim a deserved victory.
The final will be on Wednesday, December 11 against Queen Mary's College, Basingstoke, at Winchester College (ko 1-30 pm).
