A charity helping teenagers in Alton is hosting its first open day to attract new donors as demand for its services soars.

The Kings Arms is opening its doors tomorrow (Saturday) from 10am until midday for businesses, families and individuals to discover what it does and be inspired to help it.

With an increase in volunteers and a greater level of financial support from the Alton community, the team at The Kings Arms feels it could significantly increase the number of young people whose lives are being improved through its services.

Programme manager Jen Hammersley said: “The Kings Arms makes such a difference to Alton’s young people because they are welcomed by experienced youth workers and mentors into a supportive, secure and confidential environment where they feel safe to talk, they can build confidence and friendships, and look forward to a brighter future.

“We want to help more young people and develop our programmes in Alton further, but this absolutely relies on more donations, which is why we’re keen to meet anyone in the community who can help us, no matter how big or small the donation, or perhaps you could help us with our fundraising. We’d love to show you around our centre and tell you about what we do.”

Demand for mental health support among young people is sky high, with the number of youngsters being diagnosed with difficulties having risen by 40 per cent in the last five years.

The charity runs a variety of volunteer-supported activities in Alton, including after-school clubs, one-to-one and group mentoring, an additional needs club, faith programmes, anxiety workshops and clubs for young carers, supporting around 120 teenagers each week.

It provides small group mentoring within school time to help young people already struggling. It covers recognising and managing emotions, supporting positive choices and identifying future aspirations, all while fostering self-belief and self-confidence.

Local businesses or organisations which offer grants, sponsor a charity or do philanthropic giving are encouraged to attend. For details see www.thekingsarms.org.uk/donate
