ALL 103 pupils at Selborne Primary School had a hand in decorating safety hoarding at a developer’s site in Honey Lane after entering a national competition.

Their work was officially unveiled at Hazeley Developments’ Southbrook scheme in Honey Lane on Friday, July 15.

The Considerate Constructors’ Scheme set up the national Ivor Goodsite Hoarding Competition to bring an element of fun to the serious topic of educating children about the dangers of construction sites and engage with communities by offering them the opportunity to compete for the honour of brightening up their environment.

With all materials, such as boards, paints, and brushes, provided by the developer, the competition challenged the pupils to create tableaux demonstrating how to stay safe on building sites.

Hazeley Developments managing director Jonathan Humphrey said: “This is the first time we have entered the competition and the support we have received across the board from the village community could not have been bettered.”

The children chose an Olympic theme, but also wanted to featurespecial areas of Selborne, such as the Zig Zag, The Wakes, Church Meadows and the Lion’s Mouth, in their designs.

Mandie Awford, art co-ordinator at the school, said: “We had a large tree in the design and each child made a clay leaf for it with clay supplied by Selborne Pottery.

“Throughout the project I, along with pupils, parents, grandparents, teachers, governors and businesses have united and shown a great community spirit and also delivered a vital safety message around building sites.

“The boards went up at the site last Friday. Out of the 60 or so schools who entered nationally, Selborne School were runners-up and each pupil received a medal and a goodie bag. The pupils are very proud of the boards and we hope, depending on the condition they are in, to take them back to the school where we can display them.”
