A BUS service in Bordon is to be replaced with a taxishare scheme.

The existing 28 Bordon Local Bus Service – which runs between Bordon and Whitehill – will be scrapped from February 1 and replaced with a taxishare service.

This means residents will be asked to book a taxi and would either get picked up from their nearest bus stop or in some cases from their home address.

The move comes as the 28 bus service has become “no longer financially viable for the bus operator to run”.

Transport bosses said the new scheme will be cheaper and will allow the service to run for longer.

The decision was taken after it was revealed that on average four passengers travel on each bus journey from Monday to Saturday, with the service seeing “very poor level of use” in the afternoon.

The taxishare is said to be an interim measure.

A county council report revealed the contract for this bus service cost £53,333 a year and was funded through a government grant.

Money from the grant will now be used to fund the taxishare scheme which will start on February 1 for a year and will cost £22,327.

Cllr Andy Tree, leader of Whitehill Town Council, said the town council “was not consulted on these proposals”, but added: “I reserve judgment on this specific change until we see how the new taxishare service works in practice and welcome any feedback from residents who are always welcome to contact me directly, so I can represent their views.”

District and county councillor Adam Carew said that while he was “deeply saddened that our around town 28 bus service has been removed by the operator”, he was “very grateful to the county council for stepping in and subsidising a taxi share”.
