Alton Climate Action Network is once again partnering with the Petersfield Climate Action Network for its A Fruit Tree In Every Garden project.

Petersfield Climate Action Network has been able to raise funds to plant another 700 fruit and nut trees this season.

Each fruit tree costs just £12.50 and comes with a stake and instructions on how to plant.

These trees usually cost between £25 and £35 but thanks to the networks’ partners people can buy them at a heavily subsidised price.

There is a limited stock of each variety – types available this year include apple, pear, plum, greengage, cherry, apricot and filbert.

Filbert is similar to hazelnut and cobnut, with purple leaves over the spring and summer and pink catkins over the winter.

Tree collections will take place across East Hampshire at pick-up points in Alton, Liphook, Petersfield and Rowlands Castle on February 22.

People should select their preferred pick-up point when they place their order. Ordering is open until February 6, or while stocks last.

An Alton Climate Action Network spokesperson said: “Why are trees so important? Trees are a beneficial addition to most gardens, but in residential areas they are very important, helping with climate regulation and air filtration, and providing valuable habitats for wildlife.

“Trees, shrubs and hedges provide nesting places and materials, food sources and cover for a great variety of creatures.

“With almost half of Britain’s ancient woodland having been destroyed in the last 50 years, the need for these habitats is greater than ever - and you can help by planting a tree in your garden.”

This project is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund via the East Hampshire District Council Grow Up! Community Fund.
