A footballing family will come together on and off the pitch in Wrecclesham this weekend in a ‘George’s Day’ fundraising tribute to a “polite, friendly and much-loved” youngster.

Coaches from Badshot Lea FC Youth and Colts will compete for the inaugural George Esders Trophy at Westfield Lane this Saturday (May 3) lunchtime.

The 1.30pm match, which will involve coaches representing the U7s to U11S and U12s to U16s, is being held in memory of the BLFC youth player who died last year, aged 12.

Proceeds from the event will go towards a memorial bench at Weybourne Recreation Ground and Sasha’s Project, a charity which provides a safe place for young people in crisis and which is staunchly supported by the club.

“George was a big part of this club,” said Gemma Wheeler, who has been heavily involved in organising this Saturday’s fundraiser.

“His brother still plays for the club and his cousin plays for the girls team, and the club wanted to create an annual trophy in his honour.

“We’re putting on a memorial match involving the coaches so it’s time for them to practice what they preach and put their money where their mouths are.

“Some of the money we raise will go Sasha’s Project but we also want to pay for a memorial bench at Weybourne rec as that’s where a lot of the youth games are played and that’s also where George played.

“It’s just something for the family and everyone associated with the club.”

The fundraiser will kick off at midday with highlights including a silent auction featuring some amazing prizes like signed Crystal Palace and Aldershot shirts, a family tour of Anfield, a signed Chelsea FC football and BDFC shirt signed by Chelsea captain and Lioness, Millie Bright.

There will also be a raffle, tombola, barbecue, inflatables, cakes and stalls with entry costing £2 for adults and £1 for children.
