Plans for a “beautiful” new toilet block in the heart of Farnham have continued to cause a loo-commotion despite some big assurances from a town councillor.
Some residents have given proposals for a new block on Gostrey Meadow the stink eye with the Farnham Society among the biggest objectors.
It also came up at Monday’s Annual Town Meeting of Electors with one resident comparing the building to an ICI cycle block and another labelling the proposals “so ugly”.
Furthermore, the final price has not yet confirmed with Councillor Graham White telling the UCA audience that the redevelopment – it’s official name seems to be the Gostrey Meadow Community Facility - could cost in excess of £500,000.
He said the toilets will be “state of the art” with the block also including a storage event to help with the numerous events held on the meadow.
Responding to claims there has been some “modified rapture” about the plans, Cllr White said that Farnham Town Council didn’t want a “white elephant” before confirming there has been no tendering as yet.
He said: “This could be a £500,000 project, it could be more than that.
“At the moment it’s not gone out to tender as that depends on the build system adopted.
“We want to make sure we put a building that is going to last and it will be a state of the art convenience.”
“We also worked on the basis of volume,” added Cllr White to some sniggering from the audience, with mayor and councillor, Brodie Mauluka, adding that the block will “look beautiful” if constructed.
The audience heard that the Gostrey Meadow block and revamped play facility will be the “icing on the cake” with hopes high that work on the latter will be completed in time for the summer holidays.
