You batter believe it: an eggs-citing event is returning to a Waverley village after a lengthy absence.
The heat is rising in Elstead as the village will hold its first pancake race for half a decade on Saturday, March 1.
The event was a popular fixture on the village calendar but hasn’t taken since the outbreak of Covid in 2020.
So expect a cracking afternoon of entertainment with at least four races due to take place during the afternoon.
“We didn’t have the pancake race during Covid and it never really established itself again afterwards,” said co-organiser, Helen Page.
“I wouldn’t say it’s one of the biggest events in Elstead, like the marathon, but it’s a thing that people have missed and when they talk about it they have a smile on their face.
“It just seemed a good time to bring it back.”
There’s a slight change to tradition as the event will begin at 2.30pm on Stacey’s Farm Road, instead of the usual morning slot, with four races planned for different ages.
The adult race will be the last with Helen expecting old rivalries to resurface and hopefully no calls for VAR.
Helen said: “At the end we always have the adult race and some of them always get a bit competitive.
“There seems to be quite a lot of interest so I think there should be a pretty good turnout.”
Volunteers will be needed to cook pancakes on the day for race usage and eating while a dubious honour will be up for grabs when the village hall hosts a flipping great competition.
But it’s also for a very good cause as any proceeds from the day will go to Charlie’s Promise: a charity close to the village’s hearts given the late teenager’s links with Elstead.
