A dog left with a broken ankle following a scooter hit-and-run has been given lifechanging surgery following a grand gesture from well-wishers.

Mike Williams has been given paws for thought after a successful campaign by a neighbour to raise £6,000 for canine surgery.

The pensioner’s ten-year-old chihuahua, Digby, was badly injured after being struck by an electric scooter in late December in the “Mr Mansfield” area off Park Street in Bordon.

His elderly owner – who was using a walker – was also nearly knocked over by one of three youths who did not stop, leaving Mr Williams with a poorly pooch and vet’s bill he couldn’t afford on his basic pension.

His neighbours Wendy Sargent and Sue Bexon came to their aid and launched a www.justgiving.com campaign to raise the funds, with half the sum being raised within a fortnight of the accident.

More than £7,800 was donated in the end and Digby is now making a good recovery after getting the operation with a metal plate and screws being installed.

The mutt will need a check-up X-ray at Optivet in Havant next week, but it seems like Digby is digging his new lease of life thanks to the generosity of well-wishers.

“I’m so grateful for everyone who donated to the Justgiving page but I’ve also really got to thank Wendy and Sue for their help and support,” said Mr Williams.

“Digby is recovering well, although he’s still in a case rest,” said Wendy, who is proof that everyone needs good neighbours.

“I take him out on the lawn with his harness and lead on for five minutes at time, three times a day.

“He’s going back to the vets on March 25 for another X-ray to see how his leg is mending but we’re so grateful.”
