WEYDON School students were lucky to meet Matthew Spencer-Smith – the musical director of the award-winning West End musical Dear Evan Hansen – when he recently visited the school.

The director kindly agreed to go along and speak to some of the students when he learned that 81 GCSE drama students went to see the show the previous week.

Unbeknown to the drama staff, Mr Spencer-Smith is a Weydon parent.

When he heard about the trip to see the show, he offered to go into the school to share his experiences and give the students a look behind the scenes.

He also spoke about his experiences of working on the show, as well as talking about life in general in professional theatre.

Matthew gave an insightful talk about life in the world of musical theatre which the students thoroughly enjoyed.

All the staff and students at Weydon School were grateful to him for giving up his time.
