AN “elderly man” had to be cut, unconscious from his overturned car after a crash in The Street, Wrecclesham on Sunday afternoon.

Nearby residents and customers at The Bear & Ragged Staff pub heard the two-car smash on the A325 outside the pub shortly after 4.30pm and called 999.

One of the cars, a Honda, had rolled onto its roof and its occupant, described by the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) as an “elderly man”, was knocked unconscious.

Villagers including an off-duty ambulance worker and a passing doctor rushed to his aid and, with the man bleeding from a head wound, reportedly cut the man free themselves before the arrival of the emergency services.

Two fire engines from Farnham and Guildford arrived soon after, followed by the police who closed The Street at around 4.45pm redirecting traffic via Riverdale, two road ambulances and a paramedic car.

The Kent, Sussex and Surrey air ambulance was also deployed and landed at Wrecclesham recreation ground.

The driver of the Honda was treated for head, lower arm and lower leg injuries, and regained consciousness before being accompanied by a doctor from the air ambulance by road to Frimley Park Hospital.

His current condition is unknown. The driver of the other car involved apparently escaped without injury.

Surrey Police re-opened The Street at 6.20pm after officers ensured the condition of the road.

It comes amid calls to improve road safety on the A325 in Wrecclesham following the tragic death of pedestrian Amy Harris after she was hit by a van in September.
