The 2024 programme of 17 films at Alton Assembly Rooms, which started in April with Oppenheimer, concludes on December 15 with a 3pm showing of the multi-award winning movie Cabaret (15).

In 1931 Berlin a starry-eyed singer romances two men while the Nazi party grows into a brutal force. Inside the Kit Kat Club in Weimar Republic Berlin, singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minelli) and an impish emcee sound the clarion call to decadent fun.

Winning seven BAFTAs and eight Oscars, the classic 1972 film differs from the Broadway musical. “Satanically catchy, terrifyingly seductive... directed with electric style by Bob Fosse... Cabaret is drenched in the sexiest kind of cynicism and decadent despair” wrote film critic Peter Bradshaw.

Tickets can be bought at the door, priced £6 (£5 U3A members and Abri residents).

Details of local films, including those coming up at the Allen Gallery, are updated on the Films In Alton Facebook page, at Alton Events at https://altonevents.co.uk, and in leaflets available from the Assembly Rooms, Allen Gallery, Goldfinch Books and Cassidy’s.

Tim Woolman from the Save Alton Cinema group said: “We are hugely grateful to Dementia Friendly Alton, the Abri Community Fund and the regulars and newcomers enjoying films with us.

“Together we are trying to keep the spirit of cinema alive in Alton. We look forward to having a chat with all those interested in films at various local events. Suggestions for 2025, through [email protected], are also welcome.”
