Farnham-based artist Stavros Kotsiréas is showing a retrospective of his work at the University for the Creative Arts next month.

Silent Nature is a free three-part exhibition, with the intention to redefine the notion of ‘still life’ through his innovative concept of ‘silent life’.

Stavros explained: “From the moment you create something, you give an air to the artwork, and I believe nature is neither still nor dead.”

Having lived in Farnham since 1997, Stavros’ artwork is continually inspired by the nature around him. He attributes his appreciation and bold use of colour to his Greek heritage.

The first part of the exhibition will be a selection of his landscape works, the second will feature his black ink sketches and the third part - which will reside in the UCA’s main Hockey Gallery - will be a showcase for his latest work, his diptychs or Silent Life.

These most recent works have evolved over the last 15 years, consisting of three-dimensional elements inspired by nature, encased in a box made from weathered wood, and displayed alongside a painting that responds to these natural elements, bringing them all together.

Stavros said: “You will see for a few seconds how the artist thinks – the journey from the source of inspiration to the inspired artwork.

“Art is one of the only ways I can express my deeper feelings. I don’t think I can do anything else but the creative process – art is a way of life.”

The exhibition runs from April 14 until May 23 and the gallery is open Monday to Friday from 10am until 5pm.

There is a private view on April 12 from 11am until 4pm for which the Greek ambassador to the UK will be in attendance.
