The Catholic community of St Joan of Arc Parish in Farnham has joined millions of faithful around the world in mourning the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, who passed away today (Monday, April 21).

In a statement by Father Simon Dray, Parish Priest of St Joan of Arc Church, he expressed his sorrow, as well as gratitude for Pope Francis's life and ministry.

“The Catholic Parish of St Joan of Arc in Farnham joins the world in praying for the repose of the soul of His Holiness Pope Francis and gives thanks for his apostolic and petrine ministry to all people, in which he brought us the joy of the gospel and affirmed us all as pilgrims of hope,” said Fr Dray.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, served as pontiff from 2013 until his death, distinguishing his papacy with a focus on mercy, humility, environmental stewardship, and compassion for the marginalised.

“In his 12 years as the ‘Vicar of Christ’ and ‘Bishop of Rome’ he particularly taught us about the mercy of God,” added Fr Dray.

Fr. Dray highlighted the significance of the Pope’s key writings, including Laudato Si', which called for urgent care for the environment; Fratelli Tutti, which emphasised human fraternity in a divided world; and Dilexit Nos, a more recent reflection on the traits of Jesus Christ.

Fr Dray concluded his statement with prayer for the dead, invoking eternal rest for the late pontiff.

"Eternal rest grant unto His Holiness Pope Francis, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace,” said Fr Dray.

“O God, faithful rewarder of souls, grant that your departed servant Pope Francis, whom you made successor of Peter and shepherd of your Church, may happily enjoy for ever in your presence in heaven the mysteries of your grace and compassion, which he faithfully ministered on earth.

“Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.”
