Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care, Teddies for Loving Care, Shannon Court Care Home and two Farnham residents’ moonwalk for women’s cancer received donations after Surrey Freemasons raised more than £10,000 by hosting golf and fishing days.
Members of Castle Lodge in Farnham organised the events and donated the money raised to causes close to them.
Phyllis Tuckwell provides supportive and end of life hospice care for patients and families living with an advanced or terminal illness. It is a charity frequently supported by Farnham Freemasons because of the work it does, which has touched many lives in the area.
Teddies for Loving Care provides unique cuddly bears to accident and emergency departments for medical staff to give at their discretion to young children.
The bears are used to help soothe, distract or demonstrate procedures to children, and as such are highly valued by medical staff, parents and the children themselves.
Many Surrey residents have found their difficult trip to hospital with their children aided by the comfort provided by these bears.
Shannon Court Care Home in Hindhead provides residential care and dementia support through permanent care or short stay respite breaks to Freemasons and the local community.
The MoonWalk Iceland is an initiative from Walk the Walk, a breast cancer charity which sees hundreds of women each year walk a marathon at night across the Icelandic landscape.
Farnham residents Nikki and Shannon Mitchell were supported with money from these charity days and successfully completed the walk in seven hours and 15 minutes, raising £5,000 for Walk the Walk in the process.
The fishing day at Gold Valley Lakes saw 33 people turn out and they all had a brilliant time despite some rain. From experienced anglers to those who could barely tell their rod from their reel, all pitched in alongside local businesses to raise £3,000 for charity.
The golf day, held at Milford Golf Club, was an even greater success - with much better weather - and saw 56 players out on the course to raise a further £7,000.
Highlights of the event included the head of Castle Lodge in Farnham’s bright red golfing attire and a wonderful feeling of camaraderie around the 18th green as the day drew to a close.
Charlotte Quay-Barnham, community fundraising manager at Phyllis Tuckwell, said: “A big thank you for your generous donation, which would pay for a physiotherapist for two weeks to help patients improve their quality of life and remain independent. The local Freemasons’ support makes it possible for us to continue supporting over 250 patients, carers and relatives every day.”
John Mitchell, a Farnham Freemason and organiser of the events, said: “The charity days this year were fantastic and it was great to be able to raise money for causes very near to our hearts. The work these charities do is vital to our community and it is fantastic to be able to support them while also providing great days out for golfers and anglers in the local community.”
