A blockbuster movie starring Gerard Butler that was partially filmed in Alton is set to hit cinemas soon.

In May, film crews descended on the East Hampshire town to shoot scenes for Greenland: Migration, the sequel to the 2020 post-apocalyptic thriller Greenland.

While Greenland made headlines recently due to Donald Trump’s controversial comments about invading the Denmark-owned territory, the movie has no connection to these political events. Instead, Greenland: Migration focuses on survival in a world ravaged by catastrophe.

During filming in Alton, parts of the town centre were closed off, preventing residents from catching glimpses of Butler and the rest of the cast and crew at work.

A post-apocalyptic market scene was shot in Alton's historic Market Square, with local landmarks, including Alton Town Hall, transformed into key elements of the set.

The town stood in for a devastated Liverpool, with signs for tourist attractions such as Anfield scattered around the scene.

Anstey Park also served as a location for the film, where Gerard Butler was caught on camera in an altercation with paparazzi as one of them impeded a photo opportunity with a young child.

Greenland: Migration is slated for release in UK cinemas on March 28, 2025.
