An appeal to site a gypsy caravan in Dockenfield has been dismissed.
Phil Rowe, the appellant, wanted to create a pitch for a single gypsy caravan on land south of Goose Cottage, Green Lane, instead of a double garage for which permission had been granted.
The appeal was dismissed on the grounds of unsuitable location and harm to the area’s character and appearance.
The Inspector was also concerned that the proposal could have an adverse effect on ecology, biodiversity and protected trees, and would conflict with the development plan as a whole.
While being a gypsy or traveller is a protected characteristic, the Inspector considered the harms resulting from the development would outweigh the benefits in terms of advancing equality.
