The man whose outstanding investigative journalism helped catapult the Post Office scandal to the forefront of the public consciousness will tell the inside story of it at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford on May 15 at 7.30pm.
Nick Wallis will be joined on stage by Seema Misra, the former West Byfleet sub-postmistress from Knaphill who was wrongly jailed for 15 months while pregnant after the Post Office blamed her for a £75,000 shortfall caused by its faulty Horizon accounting system.
Hundreds of innocent people like Seema fought to clear their names having been stripped of their jobs and livelihoods. Many were forced into bankruptcy or borrowed from friends and family to give the Post Office thousands they did not owe.
Following the astounding and rightful public outrage, brought to the fore by ITV’s Mr Bates vs The Post Office, Nick expertly chronicles the very latest twists and turns of the whole affair.
In two hours this show takes the audience on a highly emotional and thoroughly informative journey, unveiling even more shocking details and stories around this gripping, unbelievable and outrageous scandal.
Nick explains the shambolic commissioning of Horizon and examines the punitive methods employed by the Post Office – bypassing the police and the Crown Prosecution Service – to create the most widespread miscarriage of justice in UK legal history.
He will then spotlight the subsequent heinous cover-up and the staggering legal battles fought and won by campaigning sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses against all the odds.
As the public inquiry into the scandal reveals yet more horrors, and the government fast-tracks new laws and finds new resources to resolve compensation, Nick will explain the very latest developments and their significance.
Nick will talk about his 14 years of meeting sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses, collating evidence and testimony from top secret sources within Fujitsu and the Post Office, read from his book on the scandal, and hold a question and answer session, giving the audience a chance to explore areas in more detail.
The format will see Nick talk for an hour before the interval.
This will be followed by a half-hour question and answer session, an interview with Seema and a book signing.
