Farnham Youth Choir marked its 40th anniversary with a remarkable concert at London’s Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Square, attended by the Mayor of Farnham – and featuring a message of congratulations by King Charles III.
The special evening included performances from all three choirs in the FYC family – Training, Junior and Senior – conducted by Claire Robins, Margaret O’Shea and Patrick Barrett, accompanied by pianists Matthew Rickard and Susan Norman, and organist Brian Cotterill.
There was also a special appearance by the Alumni choir, made up of members from the choir’s 40-year history.
The programme ranged from the 1500s with Croce’s Cantate Domino to contemporary works by Michael Higgins and Tracy Wong, an arrangement of folk song Drunken Sailor, a medley from Mary Poppins, and choral favourite The Lord Bless You And Keep You by John Rutter.
A rendition of I’m Goin’ Up A Yonder stirred emotions, led by former artistic director Joanna Tomlinson.
Founded in 1984 by David and Gillian Victor-Smith, FYC has garnered accolades under successive leaders, including wins at prestigious competitions and international acclaim.
David's return to conduct a cherished piece was another highlight, accompanied by alumnus Graham Ross.
FYC invites new members aged seven to 18 to join its journey of choral excellence, offering inclusive opportunities through a bursary scheme. To support this, FYC will participate in Big Give’s ‘Arts for Impact’ campaign, with donations doubled between March 19 and 26.
The Senior Choir is also fundraising for its participation in the World Choir Games in New Zealand.
