Anyone keen to find out more about Alton should try one of the monthly Alton Town Guided Walks.

They start from the Cairn war memorial at 11am on the third Saturday of the month, with the next one taking place on January 18.

A spokesperson for Alton Town Guided Walks said: “Where did the phrase ‘Sweet Fanny Adams’ originate? Where can you find musket ball holes in a door? Where did Jane Austen enjoy retail therapy? Where is the second-oldest purpose-built Friends Meeting House in continuous use in England?

“For answers to these questions, plus more history and insight from local guides, come along to an Alton town walk.”

The cost is £3 for over-16s and 50p for children aged five to 16. For more details call 01420 85057.
