The bright spark behind Farnham’s most festive house has pleaded for help in keeping the Christmas lights on in support of a much-loved charity.

Local legend Gail Whattingham is one of Farnham’s most illuminating subjects as her ‘Christmas House’ on Greenfield Road has been a must-see every December since the late 1980s.

But there’s no guarantee her dazzling light show in aid of Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice will take place this year as her electricity provider has shown a lack of Christmas cheer.

The 78-year-old from Wrecclesham has appealed for someone to sponsor this year’s display as she worried the annual showpiece could be too expensive to run because of rising electricity bills.

“I refuse to take any money from residents to help with the running costs,” said Gail, who has raised tens of thousands for charity through 37 years of displays through donations and a QR code.

Gail Whattingham has asked for sponsorship help amid fears about rising energy bills.

“I asked my energy firm if they could help but they haven’t got back to me. A reply would have been nice.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure when the switch on will be this year because of the bills. I’ve got people asking me all the time but at the moment it’s probably going to be December 6 or 7 until New Year’s Day.

“If the cost was covered I’d put them on December 1 but I don’t want to leave myself with too much to pay.”

The London 2012 torchbearer added: “I don’t want to stop doing it, but the reality is I need someone to help with the cost of running it.”

Gail would be happy to erect a board displaying the sponsor’s name if any firm or well-wisher can help the kind-hearted fundraiser.
