A LOCAL boy who once sailed a captured Nazi U-boat up the Thames estuary into London has celebrated his 100th birthday.

Don Olley marked the momentus occasion with his son, grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends and family at The Bush Hotel, Farnham, on Sunday.

Don was born in Herrett Street, Aldershot on March 21, 1922 and has lived in the general area most of his life.

During the Second World War he joined the Royal Navy and served in the submarine service.

When German submarines were captured at the end of the war, U776 was sailed up the Thames manned by men of the Royal Navy and flying the White Ensign and berthing at Westminster Pier.

Don was one of the crew members at the time.

Everyone at the Herald would like to wish Don a very happy birthday!
