Blair Parrott is on a mission to support men’s mental health in Farnham and across Surrey through the Men’s Pit Stop.
The group, created by Blair, is a supportive space where men can share their own experiences and listen to each other.
It meets every Wednesday evening from 7.30pm to 8.30pm at Farnham Rugby Club in Monkton Lane.
Blair has also launched groups in Merstham, Stawell, Tattenham Corner and Woking with the aim of having one in every major town or city in Surrey.
Blair says: “The reason I have set up Men’s Pit Stop is we are seeing a high increase in suicides amongst men.
“I wanted to do something where men can come together and feel okay to share their stories as we have a real issue with men not being able to talk.
“We need to work a way in which men can safely sit together and have those conversations, so we create a really safe environment for men to be.”
Men are not under any pressure to talk and are free to sit for a few weeks if they need to.
There is a strong safeguarding policy in place and Blair and the volunteers connect attendees with local safe havens and professionals for ongoing support.
The initiative is run through Blair’s work at Surrey County Council and he emphasises the community support.
Blair said: “We're getting a lot of buy-in from local organisations because they see the value of it and they see the need which is huge.
“Farnham Rugby Club very kindly offered us their venue free of charge on a weekly basis.
“The co-op are funding tea, coffee and milk so the cost factor is my time.
“The facilitators are volunteers, so it's really cost-effective and sensible.”
