TOWN clerk Mike O'Neil took a well-earned rest after successfully completing the 108-mile Greensand Way over the Easter holidays. Keeping him company on his expedition were Haslemere Preparatory School teachers Tony King and Aidan Turns. The walk started at Ham Street, near Ashford, and finished in Haslemere High Street. For much of the way they were joined by Marian Rugginz and Charlotte Beck who also teach at the school. The hikers, who aimed to cover twenty miles each day, admitted that once or twice they had travelled several miles further due to poor signposting, particularly in Kent, and parish councils will be contacted suggesting improving signage. There was drama during the trek when Mr King's wife, current Mayoress Melissa King, was rushed to hospital when their expected second child threatened to arrive three weeks early. It was a false alarm, and Mrs king was there, together with son, Harvey, to welcome back the group as they finally staggered down the High Street after five gruelling days. Councillors and friends had also gathered to welcome their return, and the Mayor laid on champagne for everyone, who then toasted the weary heroes and heroines on their achievement. The walk was to support the Mayor's two charities which are benefiting from the sponsorship. Mr O'Neil said that he had still not recovered from blisters and swollen ankles. Sponsorship is still open and any donations are to be made to the Haslemere Town Mayor Charity, c/o Town Hall, High St, Haslemere GU27 2HG.
