The best motocross riders from across the UK and Europe will descend on Oakhanger this weekend with a new motocross track built on MoD land in the village set to host its first-ever event.

The new ‘sand circuit’ off Hogmoor Road at Oakhanger was developed and built by world-class track builders Justin Barclay and Alfie Smith, and was set to host its first event last weekend before it was postponed as a result of the recent snowfall.

Instead, the track’s debut event will be round one of the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship this Sunday – with motocross fans, families and other interested parties welcome to spectate. 

This will be followed by the rescheduled first round of the Michelin MX Nationals, taking place over the weekend of March 25 and 26, with spectators again welcome. 

The new motocross circuit at Oakhanger is the second new track built on Ministry of Defence land after the launch of Oxford Moto Park to the British motocross scene in 2022.

The layout of the Hogmoor Road track is based on that of a Dutch motocross circuit, which are known to be technically challenging with undulating surfaces, whoops, rhythm sections and steep jumps, and they are often made with sand, making them even more challenging. Its circuit layout will be changed between events.

The new track has come about through a partnership between Revo ACU British Motocross Championship and MX Nationals, two separate British motocross championships that have joined forces to bring new tracks to the sport in 2023.

Neil Irwin, of MX Nationals, said: “I am delighted to be able to present the opportunity to new tracks to both the championship and the wider motocross industry.

“We are losing too many tracks in the UK. It is vital for the future of the sport and the riders that we can continue to develop land and build great tracks here in the UK. 

“We must provide them with circuits to develop their riding and nurture them to progress and compete in the world arena.”

Gareth Hockey, managing director of RHL Activities Ltd, which organises the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship, added: “It is great to be working with the MX Nationals UK team in 2023 to bring new venues to the British motocross scene.”

He also emphasised the importance of providing new circuits to the riders in the country to assist with developing them to go into international events.

This Sunday’s British Motocross Championship opener at Oakhanger promises a great day out for anyone who is interested in motorsport but also those who are looking for a family day out.
