A MAN who set himself the challenge of running 1,000 miles in 2021 has raised around £2,300 for Prostate Cancer UK.
Phillip Giles, of Alton, who set up a GoFundMe page at https://gofund.me/1a8d3dfe, ran his last six miles on December 30.
He said: “I finished those six miles, but they felt like they were the toughest miles I have ever run.
“I am so pleased to have completed the challenge and to have raised money for the charity. I have now hung up my running shoes for a well-deserved break!”
Proud wife Georgie Giles said: “He has done amazingly. He has raised an incredible £2,180 on the page and has also collected more money in charity boxes.”
The prostate is a gland in the pelvis which is about the size of a walnut and is part of the male reproductive system.
Prostate cancer mostly occurs in men aged over 50 and usually takes many years to develop.
Symptoms are various changes to normal urination caused by the prostate getting bigger. The cancer needs detecting before it spreads.
A spokesperson for Prostate Cancer UK said: “Prostate Cancer UK is here to stop prostate cancer being a killer.
“One man dies from prostate cancer every hour in the UK – that is 8,760 each year – and deaths from prostate cancer are set to soar over the next decade. By finding better tests, better treatments, better prevention and better support, we aim to dramatically reduce the number of men dying from prostate cancer.”
Phillip said: “It meant so much to me. This idea was all about my dad and his battle with prostate cancer, which thankfully we’ve won, so together we can raise awareness of this illness and save many more lives.”
