This year’s Punch Bowl Challenges attracted 240 runners.

Bright and early, volunteers arrived and began the preparations for the Punch Bowl Challenges, a series of races offering 1km, 2.5km, 5km and 10km routes, as well as a 50m dash for the youngest children.

This was the tenth year in which the race has been jointly organised by the Haslemere Border Athletic Club (HBAC) and the Black Down and Hindhead (BD&H) Supporters of the National Trust.

Bob Monteath, the race director for HBAC, played a key role in the planning and organisation of the run, while Philip Currie and Philly Hall, from the supporters, organised the logistics. Marshals were positioned at all key points on the course to show the way and offer encouragement.

The junior races were started by Annalisa Alexander, head of the junior school at the Royal School.

The Mayor of Haslemere Councillor Jacquie Keen, and Councillor John Robini, were in attendance.

Cllr Keen started the 10km race, gave out the prizes and engaged with a wide range of participants.

All participants received a beaver-shaped medal.

The proceeds from the challenges will be jointly split between HBAC and the BD&H Supporters.

The supporters provide funding for a range of projects on National Trust properties – including the Beavers who are creating a series of ponds and wetlands close to Haslemere. The Royal School, Yeoman (Honda) Churt, Fitstuff, Tesco and Wellers Auctions all sponsored the event.

BD&H Supporters chairman Bob Daniels said: “Our grateful thanks to all the volunteers and runners. You all helped make this a very special day for all concerned.”
