A rare natural phenomenon has hit Hindhead after freezing overnight temperatures in Surrey and Hampshire.
Herald reader Tricia Sturgeon found an ice spike in her garden after the freezing temperatures hit.
Tricia said: "We have spotted something we’d never heard of before in our garden in the past day – we have a 30-centimetre ice spike sticking up out of our bird bath in our garden.
"These are rare, and only happen when the weather conditions are just right and there is a gentle breeze. It is 30 centimetres long and looks beautiful."
The Met Office had issued a yellow warning for ice in Surrey and Hampshire, effective from 6pm yesterday (Tuesday) to 10am today (Wednesday).
Forecasters had warned people to expect difficult driving conditions overnight into this morning (Wednesday).
The warning came after several roads were closed because of black ice on Monday evening.
Numerous crashes were reported across the area, with the B3006 between Greatham and Selborne, and the A272 from Petersfield to Langrish among the local roads closed.
A woman had to be helped from her car after hitting ice and crashing on the Bordon relief road. Several collisions were also reported on Folly Hill and Odiham Road in Farnham because of black ice.
