CLASSIC car enthusiasts enjoyed a field day when more than 200 prized pre-1976 vehicles were parked up on Haslemere’s Lion Green for the popular annual show, now in its eighth year.
On display, was one of the few cars to be made in Wales. The 1963 Gilbern GT (pictured) was manufactured by Gilbern Sports Cars, founded in 1959 in a tiny workshop in Pontypridd.
Show organiser James Ewing, a broker and classic car restorer, laid on a scenic tour for 100 drivers through South Downs National Park to Goodwood Motor Circuit and back in time for Sunday’s show opening at midday.
The route was mapped out using pictorial representations of Tulips, a system first used in Dutch rallies in the 1950s. Keen competition to win the ‘best dressed car and driver’ competition, ensured entrants were as beautifully presented as their vehicles.
“It was a difficult decision but the prize was awarded to Lisa Costello in her beautiful and cute BMW Isetta,” said Mr Ewings. “Lisa only finished restoring the car two weeks before, just in time for her wedding.”
In the people’s choice competition, visitors voted for the car they would most like to take home. The winner was Gary Bartlett’s 1972 MK1 Ford Capri. Runners-up: Bob Marchant’s 1967 Austin A35 Police Van and David Lucas’ 1965 MGB.
