A proposal for a Parkrun in Farnham has gained support from local runners, sports clubs, and businesses, as organisers continue to push for a run at the 'ideal' location.

Farnham Rugby Club has endorsed Parkrun director Jodie Sikkel’s efforts to bring the weekly community five-kilometre run to Farnham Park.

A spokesperson for the club said its members had “first-hand experience of the benefits of Parkrun,” and that “should a suitable location be found in central Farnham, where local people can walk, bike, and run to the event, we would gladly support this initiative.”

“We are a community-based club, with a strong belief in the power of sport to unite people. The club is committed to fostering a sense of community while also encouraging the local businesses in Farnham to thrive. All of which a ParkRun can also contribute to,” the spokesperson added.

More than 50 people have declared their interest in setting up the weekly event, including local teachers, runners and business owners. Now, the organisers have appealed to Waverley Borough Council for permission to use Farnham Park for a weekly run.

Ms Sikkel said: “We have considered issues raised by other residents about parking as well as businesses in the area being able to cope with an influx of runners.

“We are speaking to a mobile coffee van which uses the park to help mitigate this and we hope the council will allow us to have a Parkrun at the ideal location of Farnham Park.”

Other alternative routes have been discussed if the council rejects the proposal but the organisers believe Farnham Park is the “perfect venue” given its proximity to the town centre.

Ms Sikkel has also spoken with the organisers of the Alice Holt Parkrun and Henley-on-Thames Parkrun to arrange the loan of equipment for setting up the initial runs.
