ALTON Runners handed over a cheque to Alton Lions Club (CIO), in recognition of another successful race season.

Amounting to £3,500, the money was raised by last year’s Alton Ten road race and the Downland Challenge.

Runners and Lions have worked together over many years to organise and stage the two races, with all profits used by the Lions to support those in need in the local community.

It is a strong partnership initiative which results in two very different but challenging races, to attract runners from a wide area, while raising funds to support the community in which many of them live and work.

The ten mile road race takes place in May. Starting from Eggar’s School, it takes competitors out of Holybourne and up the hill to Binsted before dropping down to Blacknest and along the road to Bentley, returning via Isington and Binsted.

This popular road race attracts a strong field, including teams, and is part of the Hampshire Road Race League.

This year, the 36th road race will take place on Sunday, May 3. The race HQ is at Eggar’s School and registration opens at 8.30am for the race at 10.30am.

The Downland Challenge is a cross-country run that takes place in October, following a course from Anstey Park along tracks and over fields, and up over Holybourne Down.

Both races are marshalled by Alton Lions, who used the previous year’s race money to make donations to Brendoncare Alton, Hart Wildlife and individuals in need, and to support the Prostate Cancer testing project.
