GRAYSHOTT Stagers join the celebrations at the end of this month in honour of Hindhead’s most famous resident Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, with four performances of ‘The Revenge of Sherlock Holmes’ at Grayshott Village Hall.
The musical with book, music and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, is directed by Heather Legat with Lizzie Hales as musical director and Tony Carpenter plays the super sleuth, while Ian Wilson-Soppitt is Dr Watson.
What appears at first to be the final confrontation between the master detective and his arch-enemy, Professor Moriarty, proves to be more than even Holmes bargained for.
He finds himself facing an old-but-new enemy, who is more lethal than ever.
Committee member Peter Budd said: “We feel privileged to be putting on a show that references Sherlock Holmes when his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, had so many local links.
“From 1897-1907 his home was Undershaw, which is now occupied by Stepping Stones School, which kindly allowed us to use the premises for our publicity. We are very grateful.
“Conan Doyle’s mother, his first wife and one of his sons, Kingsley, are all buried at St Luke’s Church.
“He was in the winning Grayshott Cricket Club team which defeated Linchmere, when it won the I’Anson Cup in 1903.
“Sir Arthur also frequented The Fox and Pelican pub, as we have done after rehearsals.
“By 1893 Conan Doyle was bored with Sherlock Holmes and he decided he should die.
“The Adventure of the Final Problem was published, in which Sherlock Holmes dies after falling off a cliff while battling the evil Professor Moriarty.
“But was that the end? This is the point at which our show begins.”
The show is being staged daily at 7.30pm, from Wednesday, May 23 until Saturday, May 26.
