A devoted and passionate football coach who died suddenly in August will remain by the touchline in spirit thanks to his sons and the Farnham sporting community.

Gareth Rampton was a huge figure in the Farnham and Badshot Lea footballing world: a man who loved nothing more than encouraging youngsters on the pitch and getting them to enjoy the beautiful game.

So when the 49-year-old died from a sudden heart attack, his loss was felt well beyond the confines of the Farnham Town U15 Sharks dressing room.

His death made youngsters realise the importance of talking and prompted open conversations about final wishes and bereavement, especially as his sons Oliver (14) and James (12) are part of the set-up.

But now they and their team-mates will always have a reminder of the gaffer whenever they play. A bid to raise £250 for a portable bench in memory of Gareth was a winner, with donations now surpassing the £1,600 mark.

“It was horrible when it happened, but there was a lot of support and talking and that really helped,” said Oliver.

“It’s really nice that people have given so much money,” he added, before James said: “He was really loved.”

Their mother, Helen Farrier, said the funding – which has also paid for new match-balls and training equipment – was raised in Gareth’s memory by friends, family and football community.

“The team really came together,” said coach, Chris Coton.

“It’s not an easy thing to move on from and I don’t think we ever will, but I like the fact we’ve got that community here and it’s something to be proud of.”

“The one thing that came through at Gareth’s funeral was his love for the boys and his passion for coaching,” added Helen.

“The bench is in his memory. His legacy will live on.”
