There’s nothing fishy to report as “Britain’s smelliest chippy” has been binned in an upgrade that’s second to naan.

Residents in Upper Hale could be saying ‘thank cod’ as the former Oceans 11 restaurant in Farnham has been given a Lavish subcontinental makeover.

Lavish Indian Cuisine opened on Thursday (December 12), returning the restaurant on Upper Hale Road back to its origins before it was plagued by the rancid smell of fish and chip fat.

Owner, Razan Choudhury said: “I’m very excited but I’m a bit nervous because of the history of the building.

I have tried to create something special for Farnham people. I had the opportunity to open a restaurant Lavang in Ash Vale.”

“I want to give people a city experience like a night-out in Mayfair,” added Mr Choudhury.

“Try the food, taste it, and give me your honest opinion because I love this food and I want you too, as well.”

The previous chippy - it was also called Nearest Fish and Chips - took a battering from residents and planners as it was coined as “Britain’s smelliest fish and chip shop”, amid issues over planning permission and lack of ventilation.

In March the Herald reported the complaints of long-suffering neighbours who complained about their car windows being covered in clouds of grease and the “rancid” smell scaring off house-buyers.

The fish and chip shop had operated without planning permission since it opened in the former Shomraat Indian restaurant in 2019.

Before that, the original Indian restaurant closed not long after its owner was fined £10,000 for employing an illegal immigrant in 2018.

Resident Stuart Mantle said: “The chippy was deeply unpopular with locals and it put us through years of utter hell.

“The Indian restaurant returning is an overall good thing for the area.”
