A MINOR – but expensive – change has been made ahead of this year’s Remembrance Parade and Service in Petersfield.
But you would have to look in the right place, and very closely, to see where the £750 has been spent.
It took an hour’s work and a lifetime of experience for carver Robert Jolly to change an S to a C on the town's war memorial.
But it was time and money well spent according to the grandchildren of S C J West, who fell during the First World War.
The correction was part of a wider programme of conservation works to clean and restore the memorial on the High Street ahead of this weekend’s events.
Big crowds are once again expected in the town centre in a thanks to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
An assembly of uniformed organisations will gather at Swan Street car park at 9.45am for a 10.10am march to The Square.
Members of the Royal British Legion, the Combined Cadet Forces of Churches College and TPS, The Petersfield Air Training Corps and local scouts will take part in the parade with the service beginning at 10.20am.
The parade will then head to the memorial for the sounding of The Last Post, two minutes’ silence, the laying of wreaths and the reading of the roll of honour.
Participants of the Liss parade on Sunday will march from the RBL on Rake Road to St Mary’s at 10.30am for a service, wreath laying and Commendation of Fallen. Members are expected to march to the war memorial around 11.45am.
The Horndean service will start at 10.40am on Sunday around the war memorial in The Square while a 10.15am church service in East Meon will be followed by a 10.45am Act of Remembrance at the war memorial.
Clanfield’s annual Remembrance Day Service will take place in the Memorial Hall at 10.45am and will be followed by wreath-laying in the Memorial Garden.
