Planning is well under way for a fifth convoy of classic military vehicles across Hampshire to coincide with the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

It will travel from Southwick near Fareham to Basingstoke via the Meon Valley, Alton and Lasham Airfield, supported by a large contingent of motorcyclists from the Royal British Legion Riders Branch.

A spokesperson said: “We are working closely with Hampshire Constabulary and all relevant authorities, and making progress to deliver a special convoy.

“These runs are always very popular with participants and the public, who year on year turn out in large numbers to cheer us on.

“On May 10 we will be celebrating and reflecting not only upon VE Day but also VJ Day and the 85th anniversary of Dunkirk, historic occasions we must never forget.”

The spokesperson added: “We hope to invite veterans to ride with us on the day. The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal will benefit from event donations.

“We will be departing Southwick at 10am and are scheduled to arrive in Alton at approximately 10.50am. We will be stopping for a 30-minute break at Lasham at 11am and expect to arrive at Milestones Museum at midday.

“We started these convoys in 2019 - which was the D-Day 75th anniversary - and we have decided that the historic occasion of VE 80 will be our last.

“It’s the right time to stop and it brings our contribution full circle, and it will be a fitting end to everything we have achieved over the last few years.

“This will be the last official convoy event organised by our volunteers so we really hope you can take part and help us all to make it a special occasion in recognition of this historic occasion.”

More information, including route details, will be released in due course.
