ALTON Runners had a successful day out taking part in the Emsworth-Basingstoke Relay, returning home with two trophies.

Overall first place went to the Chafing the Dream team, comprising Richard Taylor, Carlos Garcia Ramos, David Hayles, Alistair Morey and Matt Shaylor.

Fourth overall, and winners of the men’s trophy, were the second Alton team, Achilles Athletes – Jim Armitage, Richard Frost, Richard Scrase, Philip Scrase and Mike Sennett.

The Alton ladies were not quite able to make it a remarkable four team wins in a row, but still finished second in their category and fifth overall. The fourth Alton team, ‘Ampshire ‘Obblers, came 11th.

Starting from the Emsworth seafront, the 18-stage 72km route headed north across Hampshire, taking in some of the best scenery the county has to offer. Unfortunately for the runners, these amazing views mean having to run up and down some challenging hills, most notoriously the Shoulder of Mutton, near the aptly named village of Steep.

The event raised funds for The Rosemary Foundation.
