AFTER several weeks of knockout rounds, Bourne Club squash veterans battled out the cup and plate finals last Friday.
In the main event, top seed John Lane was up against surprise finalist Simon Chambers.
Belying his status as underdog, Chambers went off like a train and, playing some tight squash, looked like he might cause an upset.
Helped by some Lane errors, Chambers needed only two points to clinch the first game.
But then Lane started to return everything and the outsider wilted under the pressure, losing the crucial opening game 13-15.
After that disappointment, it was going to need a mighty effort from Chambers to stay in the match. Lane was now into his stride and duly took control, taking the second game 15-7. With Chambers tiring, Lane won the final game 15-9 to claim the trophy.
Over on the other court in the plate final, ‘youngster’ Steve Brownlow was taking on Alan Searle who was conceding at least 20 years in age, if not in technique.
However, the age gap proved the decisive factor and despite going for many successful winners, young legs told and Brownlow ran out a 15-6, 15-8, 15-2 winner.
The prizes were presented by Bourne Club squash chairman Alan Carpenter.
