Farnham’s first team fell to a 47-run defeat at Oxted and Limpsfield on Saturday.

Under a blameless sky and with the pitch looking good, Farnham’s returning skipper James Berry won the toss and elected to bowl first in the Saturday heat.

Berry had faith in his new-ball bowlers Rob Goldsworthy and Brady Poole to make inroads into the Oxted line-up.

The captain was duly rewarded when Goldsworthy bowled Oxted captain Joe Murtagh through the gate for one. Poole then cleaned up opener Stuart Fletcher for five and claimed the scalp of overseas player Nick Fletcher, who was well caught by Russell Golding at slip.

Goldsworthy continued to wreak havoc at the other end, having Isaac Miller caught at slip by Nathan Thorpe and taking a sharp return catch to remove Harvey Cutmore.

Skipper Berry brought himself into the action and bowled Ned Lack for two to leave Oxted reeling at 43 for seven.

Ben Cooper remained obdurate and survived a couple of dropped chances as Farnham started to feel the heat of the day. Berry threw the ball to spinner Thorpe who rewarded his captain by trapping Cameron Read leg before wicket for nine. Oxted were 65 for eight.

Cooper was joined by Ed Thomas and a number of aerial shots narrowly avoided Farnham fielders. This was combined with another costly drop as the pair put on an energy-sapping 61 for the ninth wicket. Berry turned back to Goldsworthy to find the breakthrough, and he delivered as Cooper was caught at cover by Adam Elstow for 28.

Thomas and Ben Valliant added another 40 before Golding pinned Thomas on the pads for a crucial 63 and Oxted were bowled out for 166.

Goldsworthy was the pick of the bowlers with four for 32 from his 14 overs.

Thorpe and Jamie Strachan opened the batting for Farnham against a revved-up Oxted side, and Aussie overseas quick Nick Fletcher bowled Strachan for a duck as part of a very brisk opening spell.

Valliant then produced an absolute snorter to Berry, who edged to slip for one and Farnham were immediately in trouble at eight for two.

At the other end Thorpe looked in good order, but when he was caught for 12 Farnham were 23 for three.

As has often been the case this season, the responsibility of rebuilding fell on the shoulders of Tom Flack, who again looked calm and composed.

Thomas Grimes’ stay was relatively brisk as he was caught behind for seven.

Golding and Flack combined to tick the score along against Oxted spinners Lack and Cutmore, but when Golding was adjudged leg before wicket for seven Farnham looked adrift at 51 for five.

Elstow joined Flack and the pair began to build a partnership until Elstow was bowled by Lack for 14. Poole entered the fray and played some nice shots of the back foot before he nicked off to the returning Fletcher for 13.

Oxted were now sniffing blood and Fletcher produced a sharp yorker to remove Sonny Temple-Hall for four.

Flack then eventually fell to Cutmore for a well-made 43, and when Jake Henderson was brilliantly caught by Fletcher the visitors were all out for 119 and the game was over.

Farnham will look to bounce back when they host Bank of England at Farnham Park on Saturday.
