The year 1985 is etched in the minds of Rowledge Cricket Club, but it took a charity fundraising jailbreak event to spark an evening of nostalgia in the Hare & Hounds Pub.
Freuchie Cricket Club in Scotland – who played Rowledge at Lord’s in the 1985 National Village Cricket Championship – entered six teams in the fundraiser for Dundee’s Grey Lodge Settlement.
Teams of two or three people ‘break out’ from HMP Perth Prison and have a maximum of 15 hours to get as far away as possible, but must not spend any of their own money.
Freuchie umpire Eddie Kennedy and 1985 Lord’s wicket-keeper and opening batter Alan Duncan made it to Rowledge.
They were hosted by three of Rowledge’s 1985 Lord’s side – Bob Simpson, Chris Yates and Brian Silver – and Rowledge chairman Carl Baker.
Stories were exchanged, as was a commemorative miniature bat and an invite to a function in Freuchie at the end of August.
