A FARNHAM racing driver who dreams of making it to Formula One is going for glory in this year’s Formula Three championship.

Olli Caldwell is currently third in the championship ahead of this week’s Belgian Grand Prix at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps.

The 19-year-old Prema Racing driver has had four podiums this season, including one race win.

Caldwell trails second-placed Jack Doohan by three points, with Dennis Hauger leading the way.

“I’m happy with my championship so far,” said Caldwell.

“I’m meeting my expectations. Second place is in my sights. There is a gap to the top, but I think it’s doable for me to get there.

“I’ve been consistent and picked up in points most races.

“Physically I’m always doing something to be in the fittest possible shape. I’m doing everything I can do to have a very good end to the season.”

This season is Caldwell’s second at Formula Three level, and the driver feels last year was an important stepping stone.

“Last year was my first year at Formula Three and it was definitely a learning year,” he said. “This year I’ve put everything into practise and I’m in the title race.”

Like many drivers, Caldwell’s journey started with karting.

“I remember watching Formula One as a child and enjoying it,” he said. “For my birthday we went to an indoor karting place, and I loved it. That’s how it started, and I went there a few times.

“I progressed to the Ginetta Junior Championship in 2016, Formula Four and now Formula Three. If I have a good result this year hopefully I can make the step up to Formula Two.

“There is a huge increase in the money needed from Formula Three to Formula Two. The dream is to then get to Formula One.”

Caldwell admitted he doesn’t have to look far for inspiration.

“Lewis Hamilton is my role model,” said Caldwell. “He is one of the best drivers of all time. There is no denying his talent.

“I also look up to Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel.”
