Farnham Sports Council are calling on local sports clubs to help tackle climate change.
The sports council previously hosted a Sport and Climate Change seminar in November 2021.
Farnham Sports Council are now encouraging local sports clubs and organisations to incorporate environmental matters as a regular agenda item for their club AGM and all committee meetings.
The sports council are also encouraging clubs to have a dedicated committee member to be an advocate and champion for the environment.
Farnham Sports Council chairman David Gill said: “Whether we like it or not, we are the first generation to feel the impact of climate change and we are probably the last generation in a position to do something about it. I guess it falls to us to act.
“Personally, I’m no expert on environmental matters but it’s telling that every year now seems to be the hottest on record.
“Above all, a community organisation such as Farnham Sports Council does, in my humble opinion, have a corporate and social responsibility to play its part in tackling climate change.
“I read recently that 70 per cent of young people want meaningful action on environmental sustainability and we at least owe something tangible to them and future generations.
“Arguably, nothing has the potential to suppress sport and physical activity, along with the health and happiness benefits it brings, more than climate change.
“Whether it’s encouraging greater car-sharing or walking or cycling to clubs and events, creating a sports kit recycling scheme or being ambitious to be carbon neutral in the future – the thousands of small changes we can make together will add up to something significant.
“Community sport in Farnham is rich with hundreds of amazing volunteers and thousands of regular participants so we have a unique platform to make a difference.”
