SHOTS striker Scott Rendell previously played for one of the select few non-League clubs to appear in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

In the build-up to the ties involving fellow National League sides Sutton United and Lincoln City, Rendell remembered the late winner he scored for Luton Town in the fourth round after coming on as a substitute against Norwich, then a Premiership side, in 2013.

“After scoring, it is a blur,” he told the Daily Telegraph. “It is quite scary, actually. We have pictures of us celebrating in front of the fans and I think ‘Did I really run there?” My parents have still got the game recorded.”

With their 1-0 victory, Luton made history by being the first ever non-League team to beat Premier League opponents. They lost 3-0 to Millwall in the fifth round.

* Three former Aldershot Town players featured for Sutton United in their brave 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on Monday. Goalkeeper Ross Worner, a former Woolmer Hill School pupil from Hindhead, made some fine saves after being deceived by Theo Walcott’s ‘air’ shot. Jamie Collins was given an 8 rating for his excellent performance in defence and striker Dan Fitchett came on as a substitute.

* Barnet are believed to be the club who approached Aldershot chairman Shahid Azeem last week, asking permission to talk to Gary Waddock and his assistant, James Rowe. The request was declined. Waddock and Rowe were informed of the approach, and of the club’s intention to fight to retain their services, and both confirmed they did not want to take the matter further.

“We are delighted that Gary and James have shown Aldershot Town such loyalty and believe in what we are all trying to achieve here,” said Azeem. “We wanted to show them the courtesy of keeping them informed, but we are personally prepared to fight to keep them at the club for as long as possible.”

League Two club Barnet have appointed Kevin Nugent as their permanent manager.
