Aldershot Town secured their third away win on the bounce after a terrific second-half comeback at Grosvenor Vale saw the Shots win 3-1 at Wealdstone in the National League.
Dom Hutchinson’s opener was cancelled out by a lightning-fast double from substitute James Henry, before Josh Barrett scored his 14th league goal of the season to secure the win.
Wealdstone took the lead in the eighth minute. A clever pass from Harrison Sohna played in Hutchinson, who dinked the ball over onrushing Shots keeper Marcus Dewhurst.
Jack Barham had a chance to equalise when Will Armitage’s long ball found him on the edge of the penalty area, but Barham’s lobbed half-volley was blocked by Wealdstone keeper Luca Gunter, with Cameron Hargreaves’ rebound sailing wide.
Wealdstone almost made it two when a corner found the head of Connor McAvoy six yards out. The guilt-edged chance, aided with the help of a slight deflection, struck the right-hand post and went out for a goal kick.
Aldershot would have to wait for the 35-minute mark to truly test Wealdstone’s goal. Aaron Jones and Ryan Jones combined well down the right, with the latter jinking past his marker before firing his shot low and true, but it was not enough to beat Gunter.
After a blood injury to McAvoy halted play, Keane Anderson made the most of the momentary numerical advantage, playing an inch-perfect ball into Aaron Jones on the right. The Shots captain played a testing low cross into the middle, although the home defence were able to clear for a corner.
It was a frustrating start to the second half for the Shots, as despite enjoying significant possession the visitors were initially unable to break down a disciplined Wealdstone backline.
The Shots’ pressure eventually told shortly after the hour mark as a Ryan Jones corner was cleared by Adrian Mariappa into the path of Hargreaves just inside the 18-yard-box. An excellent volley was parried well by Gunter, although the rebound dipped high into the path of Henry, who slotted in the equaliser.
Aldershot finally began to make their superior league position tell. Ryan Jones thought he’d put the visitors in front after catching his half-volley beautifully on the edge of the area. The ball bounced up and looked destined for the top right-hand corner, but Gunter made a smart save.
Shortly afterwards a wide free kick from Barrett sent the ball into a dangerous area. Wealdstone headed clear, but only into the path of Henry, who hit an unstoppable effort into the bottom left-hand corner.
Aldershot’s attacking pressure didn’t relent there, and the third goal followed shortly afterwards.
Ryan Jones drove down the left-flank into the penalty area before squaring a ball into the path of the penalty area, and Barrett fired his effort into the top right-hand corner with the aid of a deflection.
Wealdstone substitute Mustapha Carayol broke down the left for the hosts before cutting inside and firing a right-footed curler on the edge of the box which went high and wide.
The Shots nearly scored a fourth when Tyler Frost burst down the right-hand side before squaring centrally towards the edge of the area, but Henry was denied a hat-trick by Gunter’s diving save.
The visitors saw out the game with controlled possession to pick up another away win.
