BADSHOT LEA Ladies sealed the Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League Division One title on Sunday with a 1-0 win at home to Mortimer Ladies.
Nicola Moore’s late penalty was enough to earn the three points and seal the league title with four games to spare. The Baggies have won their 12 league games so far this season and hope to complete an unbeaten league campaign.
Manager Jamie Norris is full of praise for his side’s efforts, and wants to complete the double with success in the League Cup.
“We’ve won 12 out of 12, and the credit goes to all the players,” he said. “They’re the ones performing week in, week out.
“Sunday was not our best performance – I think we put pressure on ourselves because we knew we could win the league. We found a way though.
“It would be great if we can be unbeaten in the league and have an ‘Invincibles’ season. We’re also in the quarter-finals of the League Cup, so there is plenty to play for.”
Norris likes his players to play passing football, and express themselves on the pitch.
“We try to get the ball down and play football,” he said.
“We try to make the pitch as big as possible. Our home pitch is a big pitch, which suits our style.
“When we have to adapt our style of play the players do adapt.”
The league title means the Baggies will be playing in the Southern Region Women’s Football League next season, and Norris is confident his side will be able to adjust to the higher level.
“It will be a good test for us,” he said. “We played a higher-level team in the FA Cup, who are in the equivalent level of the Southern League, and we only lost 1-0.
“We were competitive in the game, so that gives me the confidence we can compete.”
Next up for the Baggies is a trip to Penn & Tylers Green Ladies tomorrow (Sunday) in the league (2pm).
Badshot Lea’s quarter-final League Cup tie is at home to Caversham United Women on Sunday, February 27 (2pm).
