Badshot Lea manager Gavin Smith was happy to return home from Guernsey with a point after Kareem Akinnibi’s stoppage-time penalty rescued a 2-2 draw on Sunday.

Akinnibi held his nerve from the spot in stoppage time to earn the Baggies a share of the spoils in front of a crowd of 599.

After a goalless first half, Guernsey took the lead in the 74th minute through Charlton Gauvain’s header.

The Baggies were back on level terms four minutes later through Akinnibi’s clever backheel, but the hosts regained the lead on 81 minutes through Gauvain’s penalty.

The visitors pushed hard for an equaliser and went close when Baback Dehghani’s effort hit the crossbar.

The Baggies continued to push and won a penalty in stoppage time, and Akinnibi tucked away the spot kick to earn the Baggies a point.

Akinnibi returned to the Baggies last week on a dual-registration basis from Southern League Premier South outfit Marlow, and Smith was delighted with the impact he made at Guernsey.

“I asked Kareem if he would be interested in coming back and he said yes straight away,” said Smith.

“He probably didn’t have his best game at Guernsey, but he’s scored two goals and ultimately that’s what strikers are judged on.

“It’s not just what Kareem gives us on the pitch, but also what he gives us off the pitch.

“He’s great in the changing room – he’s well liked and respected by the lads.

“He’s also not afraid to say it how it is on the pitch.”

Smith was happy to take a point from Guernsey after Akinnibi’s late equaliser, but he admitted his side could have played better.

“It was a poor game,” said Smith. “Both sides were poor on the day.

“Given how late we scored the equaliser the point is a positive for us.”
