Farnham Town claimed the Coxbridge derby bragging rights with an emphatic 5-1 victory at Badshot Lea on the opening day of the Isthmian League South Central Division season.

Goals from Owen Dean (2), Darryl Sanders, Joe Jackson and Duarte Martins gave the visitors the three points at Westfield Lane. Harvey Harry pulled a goal back for the Baggies in the second half.

Town created their first chance of the afternoon in the ninth minute when Dean cut the ball to Mark Waters, who fired his shot over the crossbar.

Dean broke the deadlock from the penalty spot on 14 minutes. Dean won the penalty himself by drawing a foul from Baggies keeper Myles Bowman after being played in by Sanders, and Dean sent the home keeper the wrong way from the spot as he confidently rolled his penalty into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Dean doubled Farnham’s advantage four minutes later. A long ball was flicked on by Adam Liddle to Sanders, who slipped the ball through to Dean. Dean showed good footwork to keep control of the ball before clipping his finish over Bowman and into the back of the net.

The visitors went close again in the 29th minute when Dean found Liddle on the edge of the box, and his right-foot shot was superbly tipped behind for a corner by Bowman.

The third goal arrived on the half-hour mark. Sanders’ initial shot was blocked, but the ball dropped for Jack Dean and his shot was cleverly steered home by Sanders.

Farnham scored their fourth of the afternoon on 34 minutes when Jackson took a touch before drilling his shot through the legs of Bowman.

Harry Cooksley was next to try his luck for Farnham in the 36th minute, but he fired his shot over the crossbar and the score remained 4-0 at half-time.

Kai Allsopp won Badshot Lea a penalty early in the second half when he was tripped up by Cooksley, but his 54th-minute spot kick was well saved by returning Farnham keeper Pat Nash.

Town went close to scoring a fifth on 61 minutes when Jack Dean had two efforts from close range well blocked.

The Baggies pulled a goal back in the 84th minute when Harry calmly slid his finish through the legs of Nash and into the back of the net.

The visitors scored their fifth of the afternoon in spectacular fashion on 88 minutes. Lewis Flatman’s corner picked out Martins, who smashed his first-time volley into the back of the net.

Farnham Town and Badshot Lea will both be action in the preliminary round of the FA Cup on Saturday, August 17. Town will entertain Sittingbourne at The Memorial Ground, while the Baggies will host Balham at Westfield Lane.
