Farnham Town Flares’ over-50s team shined in their first appearance in the Thames Valley Walking Football League.
The Flares achieved some impressive results in a series of matches at Bisham Abbey.
Competing against strong opposition, the Flares secured a mixture of wins and draws, demonstrating solid teamwork and resilience.
The day kicked off with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Reading, thanks to a precise finish from Mark Clark, following a smart move started at the back by Mick Povey before John Woodock and Steve Probert set up Clark to slot home.
Farnham continued their winning streak with a 2-1 triumph over Maidenhead, where Gary Humphrey opened the scoring, followed by a second from Clark, before a superb save by Tony Fairclough secured the three points.
Humphrey found the back of the net again in the next game, against Watford, sealing a 1-0 win, following an inch-perfect pass from George Zadrozny.
The final two games, against Wycombe and Woodley, ended in goalless draws, with the Wycombe goalkeeper tipping a precise shot from Andy Cundy just round the post.
Farnham's defensive efforts ensured they remained unbeaten, finishing top of the table on the day.
Assistant manager Mick Povey said: “It was a brilliant debut in the league and the lads played like lions out there, giving it everything and never backing down.
“It's with great pride we go to the next round of games in top spot.”
Farnham Town Flares have over-50s, over-60s and multiage teams competing in leagues and cup competitions. The club also participates in tournaments and friendly games.
Although walking football is aimed at people over the age of 50, Farnham Town Flares also welcomes players below this age who would like to continue playing. Training is held weekly throughout the year.
