The Farnham Town Flares over-60s squad travelled to Salisbury to take part in the Amesbury walking football tournament, joining clubs from all over the south of England.

The Flares started their campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Hurst from Wokingham, followed by another 1-1 stalemate against the Havant Hawks. The Flares hit their stride in their final group game with an impressive 3-0 victory against Charlbury from Oxfordshire.

The Flares then drew 1-1 against Frimley in the semi-finals. The match was settled by a penalty shoot-out, which the Flares lost 3-2.

Striker Mark Clark scored three goals on the day, Chris Allen bagged two goals and Chris Peers scored the goal of the day in the victory against Charlbury following an intricate move down the right wing.

Farnham Town Flares chairman Andy Cundy said: “It was a tough tournament played in extreme heat on a hard, unforgiving, sloping pitch.

“We were unlucky to concede a disputed goal in the semi-final just before the final whistle. While it was disappointing to lose on penalties, it was a great day of football and encouraging to have goals scored by players from different positions, showing the strength of our squad.”

Farnham Town Flares have over-50s, over-60s and multiage teams competing in leagues and cup competitions. The club also competes in tournaments and friendly games.

Although walking football is aimed at people over 50, the Farnham Town Flares also welcome players who are below this age.
