Farnham Town manager Paul Johnson was delighted to pick up another three points after his side won 3-2 at home to Spelthorne Sports in the Combined Counties Premier Division South on Tuesday night.

Town took the lead in the 25th minute when Joe Jackson volleyed home at the back post from a corner.

Lewis Flatman doubled Farnham's lead on 30 minutes when he buried his shot into the far corner.

The visitors scored either side of the interval to get back on level terms, but Farnham regained the lead in the 70th minute through Harry Cooksley's penalty.

Flatman was sent off in stoppage time when he received a second yellow card, but Town comfortably saw out the last couple of minutes to extend their winning start in the league this season to 18 matches.

"It was about the three points," said Johnson. "It was about getting out there and grinding three points out. We had to grind it out in the end.

"We were comfortable on the ball but didn't open them up enough. We got our goal and got our second one – we were well in control of the game.

"We thought it would be a hectic 15 minutes at the start of the second half. Spelthorne worked hard, but the game petered out – it was a bit of a nothing second half."

Flatman will now serve a suspension after his sending off, which Johnson felt could have been avoided.

"I think both cards should have been avoided," said Johnson.

"He's had a petty kick out, and then he's flapped the ball away and rightly should have gone."

Right-back Jack Dean made his first competitive start back from a recent injury, and Johnson was pleased to have him back.

"I thought he got through the game really well," said Johnson. "Especially with the amount of time he's had out – he didn't look out of place or rusty. A couple more games and he'll be up to speed."

Next up for Farnham is a home game against Horley Town in the Combined Counties Premier Division South on Saturday (3pm), and Town will welcome back striker Adam Liddle from suspension.

"He's a massive difference – so that's going to be a big boost to have him back," said Johnson.

"We know we're in a difficult season with weather and conditions. We like to be free flowing and do what we did at the start of the season, but it's going to be a little bit different. We're going to have to grind things out."
